Mental Resilience

What is mental resilience? Mental resilience is the ability to adapt and overcome a bad situation. Resilience originates from the Latin word RESILIO which means to bounce back or retaliate. A quote by Nelson Mandela goes “ The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but rising every time we fall.”

When I talk about adversities and setbacks, I am talking about situations like death of a loved one, divorce, loss of job, health crisis, and financial crisis. It is important to remember that setbacks and adversities are temporary. Personal growth can happen during these times.

Emotional resilience can be developed with proper knowledge, training, and motivation. Whether you are dealing with a bad situation at work, a breakup or death of family or friend. With mental and emotional resilience a person will not only handle a situation better, they also safeguard themselves from emotional devastation.

PRIORITIES  FOR MENTAL RESILIENCE

  1. SELF- AWARENESS

Think about how feelings contribute to our actions.

2)   PERSISTENCE

Consistency and commitment to keep trying.

3).  EMOTIONAL CONTROL

People with higher emotional and self control can change their way of thinking. This enables them to keep from being overwhelmed by stress. They do not act without thinking and do not jump to conclusions.

4).  FLEXIBLE THINKING

It is essential for personal and professional success. It is a combination of things put together. Optimism, adjustability, rationality, positive thinking

5).  RELATIONSHIPS/ SUPPORT GROUP

Having good personal relationships is necessary for emotional resilience. People are social creatures. Being with others gives us the strength to endure, overcome, and evolve.
